Ange May Not Seek 2nd Term

Frustrated with the rigors of being a county executive, Schuylkill County Commissioner Francis McAndrew may not be on the democratic ticket in 2010, sources say. The Clarke Report had been hearing grumblings for weeks that McAndrew, known as Ange to most in the county, was not happy with his Commissioner duties. Then following his tiff with Champ Holman, where McAndrew displayed his ignorance of the finder points of zoning regulationscm and subsequently called Holman called him “a loser” for publicly correcting him, McAndrew made it clear to a few courthouse insiders that he was seriously considering not running for a second term.

According to those sources, McAndrew has found the knowledge necessary to be effective to vast and the attention to little details daunting. In addition, the courthouse political feuds between democrats who are supposed to be on the same team (namely the much publicized cat fights with Schuylkill Controller Melinda Kantner), as well as critical attacks from a rebuilding and refocused county GOP, has reportedly drained McAndrew of any desire to continue on in his current role.

Nothing is ever a done deal in politics. I am sure that Board Chairwoman Mantura Gallagher will have her say in the matter before McAndrew solidifies any plans. democrats can ill afford to lose a political headliner in 2010 as Republicans look to be on the rebound from crushing loses in 2006 and 2007 with a slate of fresh new candidates and a new approach to county politics in general. Eliminating Ange from the ticket will make any incumbent advantage against insurgent Republicans disappear, leveling the entire playing field.
